| The Westerns are fantastic beasts; they even made BR blue look good (not an easy task). These alternatives all suit it. Thanks for sharing. |
|---|
| This could have happened. When BR made the decision to axe the hydraulics in favour of diesel-electrics, they didn't have precise or comparable figures for comparing the running costs and reliability, because the regions were using different (and not particularly wonderful) accounting methods. If they'd reformed their management and accounting techniques a few years earlier, they might have found the hydraulics to be worth keeping after all. And then maybe they'd still be here today. *sniff* |

50 in Intercity Executive - an early attempt at relivery-ing 09 Fictitious Liveries 2004 |
|---|
| These beasts are what Cross Country should have used instead of the Duffs. |
|---|
| If they did they would have had a worse reputation than the 47`s! How about a Hoover in EWS livery,? |
|---|
| Why should XC have used 50s? - my reasoning. 1 - they were withdrawn at about the same time that XC started using the 47+7 formations. 2 - They could have overhauled them before transfer (ideally G-Exam) and that might have improved reliability. 3 - Duffs are often a bit slow off the mark, the last one I saw trying to get away quickly had a flashover. 4 - I always find a top speed of 95 mph very annoying, so near and yet so far. Of course, the real reason I said it was to start a debate. Please feel free to tell me why I'm wrong. |

90 in Anglia Blue - what might have been if NE hadn't won the franchise. 08 Fictitious Liveries 2005 |
|---|
| I really like these liveries. A good idea and well executed.
Shortly before Anglia lost the franchise one of the Drivers painted a large picture featuring many different locos and units including a 90 in Anglia livery. Last time I looked it was hanging in the Customer Services office at Norwich station.
I was part of a group who did this for real a few years ago. If the 31s had been withdrawn and the 25s refurbished the perhaps the 25s would have carried Dutch livery.
25035 was painted in Dutch livery and re-numbered as 25735. It also later carried railfrieght grey and a fictional maroon livery. It is now at Great Central Railway in green as D5185..
Keep up the good work. I'd like to see a HST in Large Logo all over blue for the power cars, and the usual blue and grey coaches, basically treating them as locos not power cars.

4) Cl 42 'Warship' in German style livery (the DTG did that a few years ago.

What about the 1960s Class 60 (deltic with Hoover Body) possible to mock that up? |
|---|
| What the HELL is an accommodation van? |
|---|
| You've never heard of an accommodation van? Dear oh dear. Remember the brake tenders you used to get running in front of diesel locos in the 1960s, well a bunch of those were converted with end doors and you coupled them ahead of similarly-fitted locos. The relief crew had to lie on their backs in the dark until the "half way" boards on the ECML, then they'd crawl through to the cab; the retiring crew would then crawl through and lie in the tender until the destination. |

| First of all Excellent Fictitious liveries. The 66 in BR Blue is looks 100% realistic! Better than the Large Logo livery.
Can you try the RTC Liveries on some locos? Like the Red/Blue used on 97201, or the livery used on 31970. Also, do you know the Railtrack livery which was similar to the NSE Red, White and Blue. Also do you know the Swiss R/e 460 loco are each painting in different individual advertising liveries. Can you do this with some locos - eg. Agfa, Durex, Viagra (lol), Sky TV, Nescafe etc. |

| Hi Owen,
I enjoy your site every much. It is like dreaming "what could have happened if BR had done this/ that".
However, may I do some suggestions? After reading a couple of books on London underground, I started to imagine the London Underground being absorbed under BR and the Metropolitan line becoming a BR main line accross the city. Soo it might be good if you could try painting some LT surface rolling stock into BR blue livery.
Then, you could also try to paint the EM1/EM2s into LNER libvery, which is realy nice. You could repaint the NER electric shunter into BR blue. Also, try painting old Southern railway emus into blue/grey livery, or even Network South East. I am also imagining a livery. The locos would be in a bluish shade like electric blue, and would have a large double arrow logo on its side, but the horizontal lines of the logo would be stretched all the way along the body. Emus would have the large logo put on the place outside the guards van, orotherwise known as luggage space. They would end up looking exactly like an LMS express of the 30s. LT trains can also be painted in a similar fashion, scarlet, with the giant LT roundel in white on its bodyside.
Finally, please try painting some steam locos into modern BR colours. I am sure they will look nice in BR electric blue!
Thanks
Regards
Ernest Leung

|---|
| Actually, the APT-P was a multiple unit. The one-ended units consisted of a Driving Trailer, intermediate trailers (of variable number), and a Motor coach, and it could only run as two units coupled back to back (although it frequently ran on test with just one power car rather than two). |

| An interesting thought is that if the LNER Woodhead electifcation had extended down to Marylebone (if WW2 hadn't interferrend), would the A stock be fitted with pantographs? Perhaps running on fourth rail south of Rickmansworth. Would be a bit tight with overhead in tunnels in between Finchley Road and Baker Street. |
|---|
| Might happen yet if Chiltern gets electrified. Trains would run on d.c. to Harrow, then change to a.c. and go to Aylesbury. Since they would probably use 378s (¿E-Stock?), one in Chiltern livery might be interesting. |

| Re. your fictitious liveries:
Absolute sacrilege! Is nothing sacred today? I like to remember these locomotives as they were running in BR days and as some of them can be seen today in preservation!
Anyway, how can two West Countries fitted with vacuum brakes pull a train of Mk. 3's equipped with air brakes? If you want an air-braked locomotive, you should get the B 12 8572. Alternatively, you could use a nice train of Mk.1's with vacuum brakes.
I am deeply shocked by all and may never recover. Some of us old folks are very delicate and shocks like this could kill us. You should remember that!

| It's actually Blackmoor Vale and 92 Squadron on the Bluebell. The nameplates are there, in SWT style on the blue stripe. And let's all use a little imagination - steam locos working into the 2000s would have had air brakes fitted by now, wouldn't they? |

I best liked the 9F (original picture taken at Ropley????) and the two Bulleid-Pacifics. Both liveries look quite impressive on the engines.
Best wishes from Germany

One common suggestion is for an HST in Great Western livery. Here's one in Chocolate and Cream, assuming the 125s fit into the GWR's "railcar" concept. (I'm not the first to do Chocolate and Cream on an HST, but I thought I'd have a go anyway.) 06 Fictitious Liveries 2006 Part 1 |
|---|
| O.S.Nock, once described a set of GWR coaches at Kingsbridge, Devon, as blending into the countryside in perfect harmony. Well, what you have depicted in both your adaptations is precisely that although, perhaps as I remember the chocolate being a little darker, and the lining gold and black.
I could go on but, that would be the ramblings of a senior citizen remembering a time, never to be repeated.

Traditionalists might prefer (or not!) a more "locomotive" feel for a GWR-liveried power car. Green changing to Chocolate and Cream to the rear. 06 Fictitious Liveries 2006 Part 1 |
|---|
| Honestly, this livery was suggested for use on one HST set during the GW150 celebrations in 1985. |
|---|
| This is EXACTLY how I have always felt that WR HSTS sets should have been liveried - and one set painted like this would be a great sight to see out obn the mainline, especially during the Brunel Year.
Gets you thinking about the other routes using HSTs. Have you produced a Midland Red? |
|---|
| saw this advertised in Steam Railway, thought it excellent speciallt the A4 in virgin livery.Keep up the good work. |
|---|
| Congratulations, these two pictures of an HST in GWR livery are exactly what I had in mind in my letter to Heritage Railway which they published in their Issue No 83. What better advert / marketing for Brunel 200 could First Great Western offer than this. I wrote to their Publicity Division twice and have never received a reply ! |
|---|
| This and the cocolate and cream HSTs look fabulous - much better than they do in Barbie or fag packet.
What about the reverse though - a Manor or King in Neon? |
|---|
| although i must say that say that the power car does look rather intresting in a hybrid livery!!!!!although what doing it in reverse????? |
|---|
| Super livery but needs Isambard Kingdom Brunel nameplate one end and Sir Daniel Gooch at the other! |
|---|
| you could use that on the various preserved railways hauling WR coaches (collet coaches, mk1's, etc.) which would be really good |
|---|
| Considering I am an artist myself, I love this. I wonder that the nameplates could be like those Class 47 names like, put "ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL" (both sides) on one power car, and "SIR DANIEL GOOCH" on the other. Next time you see 43003 and /or 43002 you might consider doing a version of this livery with nameplates in place (only a thought). Keep up the good work Owen. Railway artist Edward Tucker |

| There are a number of things wrong with your electric HST:
1. It should have a 92XXX number;
2. It should have buffers; and
3. The headlights should not have been moved.
Apart from the above, your impression is pretty accurate as to what the BR Electric HST would have looked like had the plug not been pulled on the project only a few months into its life.
The buffers should be similar to those on the prototype class 252 HST, but the fairing needs to be a bit deeper as it was proposed to include jumpers within the fairing beneath the buffer. I think the side grill arrangements were envisaged as being similar to production HST power cars.
I can't remember the exact timing of the project, but it was going forward at the same time as, but a bit behind, the class 89. The main reason I remember being given as to why the project was cancelled was because BR had neither the funds nor the resources to take forward two experimental electric locos at the same time.
A model was produced for presentation to somebody (this was before the plug was pulled), but I'm afraid I can't remember whether it was to the BRB Design Panel or the BRB Investment Committee; the model was finished in blue/grey, but if the prototype electric HST had been built, it would have been either similar to the class 89 or else in swallow livery, as your impression.
Sorry, I can't remember much more that's relevant to your impression - after all, it was about 25 years ago!
You also have an impression of APT-S.
From what I remember about this project, the cab is correct but there would have been two power cars at one end; sorry, can't remember if it was the south end or the north! I think you're also correct to show individual vehicles; I remember there was some debate about whether or not the trains should be articulated, and I think the final outcome was to have individual cars, but I'm not 100% on that one.
Regarding your comment "if the Government and BR had persevered" with APT, the reason APT-S didn't go ahead was commercial - it just didn't make financial sense. Further, if the West Coast Route Modernisation with Pendolinos was evaluated using the methods BR had to use, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have gone ahead either.
Finally, a suggestion.
At the time BR ordered the last batches of class 20s (the ones with the 4-digit boxes), EE suggested a low bonnet design; this would have been achieved by dropping the frame (well-wagon fashion) between the bogies. I saw drawings for these at Vulcan Foundry back in 1968, and from what I remember they would have looked rather like the Portuguese Bo-Bos built round about the same time.
So - as a challenge! - how about a modified Portuguese Bo-Bo in various BR liveries?
Seriously, though, I've enjoyed looking at your fictitious locos/liveries/etc; I wish I had your skill! Please keep us all amused for many years to come.
Regards,
David Faircloth |
|---|
| Actually Mike, the XPT has its headlights above the windscreen and the horn above the cab. The marker lights are located below the nose, and between the marker lights is a panel for where a coupler can be mounted in case of a breakdown. |
|---|
| Mr. Fairclough: this mock-up is (i think) what an electric version of the diesel HST would have looked like. Class 88 was never assigned; 2 as above; 3, It's only a mock up. |

| Far classier than the Virgin repaint, and the tone of blue far surpasses any of the BR blue liveries applied to the A4s. I agree with Richard Swayne that the GNER logo should be on the tender, but I would certainly love it if GNER took a locomotive from their predecessor the LNER and made it look like this and actually ran it on the main line! Deffinitly shows that the classiness of the North East's railways hasn't changed! |

There are a lot of "if"s in this image... Class 77 in InterCity Swallow livery, as might have been seen if the LNER plan to electrify the GCR to London had been carried out, and if route had stayed open, and if a larger fleet of EM2s had been built (27 were originally planned), and if they'd still been in traffic in 1990... 06 Fictitious Liveries 2006 Part 1 |

| Hi,
what a wonderful collection of tram photos.. of course one problem with the photo of 304 in modern blackpool colours of course is it would have worn the 6xx number of the modern numbering fleet, 304 being a dennis Trident... Now remembering back to reading books about the early days when steam locos where used on blackpool tramway to take construction materials along the problem what would the maintenance tram (754 - i can supply a photo if you like) look like in BR Construction livery or even in EWS?
Perhaps an idea for future development of thsi collection.
cheers

|---|
| Utterly bonkers, but wonderful! More, more, more! Could I see City of Truro in Amtrak livery? Or VoR Llewelyn in Inter-City Swallow livery? If you can't laugh at this you've got to be a 'sad sad man'. Or perhaps a GNER set in fully lined out GCR livery? The possibilities are endless...
If somone did this for real I'd love to see the reactions among the purists....! |

| I should have added that this evidence only goes to proove that 'First Great Western' really WAS THE FIRST GREAT WESTERN. I was under the delusion that the marketeers in Paddington had had their memory banks clevery altered by Stanierite hypnotists, into believing that the 'real GWR' had never existed. |

| But surely the original GWR was just a myth made up to scare children? |
|---|
| Growing up in west country (and still growing/ age 15) I have naturally been brought up with the GWR, but have gradually turned away from the GWR towards the S&D (LMS & SR). Regulary seeing FGW trains as well as GWR, this has been a very interesting pic to look at. A possibility for the future could be to produce 71000 in a later livery, or prehaps with some sister locos.??? Keep up the good work!
P.S I think some people go a bit too far sometimes, and the GWR hasn't scared me...Yet. |

|---|
| as a confirmed GWR nut Ithink they look brilliant as do the westerns in this livery-wouldn't run them on my layout though.
|---|
| Hmm...I'm not sure how well those swirls blend with the copper-capped chimneys and brass safety-valve covers, but it does make a nice change from Brunswick green... |

| Wont that lining get a bit filthy |

| Excellent! As the person who originally asked for this livery on steamers (to complement the HST in GWR's chocolate and cream) I don't think it looks too bad, although I'm not too sure I'd like to see it in real life!

|---|
| I love it
It really shows the fact that anything looks cool in this livery |
|---|
| This really does prove that GW fans really hasvnt got any humour, teddy is still orbiting after the Steam Railway stunt, when they did Truro in B.R. black. this shot of the neon steamers had me and my son laughing, and hes only 4. |

| You should've done the shed I see in FGW livery |
|---|
| You should submit this to the BBC. Knowing them, they'd be dumb enough to broadcast it as a fact! |
|---|
| Wouldn't surprise me! Probably invent some story about the DfT saying its all thats left... |
|---|
| I like the First Great Western Neon Livery on all the steam trains |
|---|
| Fantastic. I love the GWR, and those coulor actually do suit the engines quite well. Pity there wasn't a King in shot. |
