Exclusively revealed in this mock-up, the livery and name for ACLG's newly preserved 87002.

We have been following the debate over which livery 87002 should be painted on many enthusiast forums, since this is by far the most important factor in saving the loco in the first place.

The following liveries have been ruled out as unacceptable by enthusiasts:

BR Blue (despite matching our 'irrelevant' and 'rancid' 86101 and the Cargo-D Mk3 rake with which it's likely to work) because there are too many blue electrics about (I can verify this is true - there are exactly two others on the main line); Porterbrook Purple is in mixed contention: some want it retained because they don't yet have a decent photo of it, some want it removed because it's purple; InterCity Executive is acceptable, but only if the Cargo-D rake is partially reliveried to make a typical mixed-livery set from the late 1980s; InterCity Swallow is favoured by many but only if the Cargo-D Mk3 set is completely repainted to match; Bulgarian Green/Yellow has been ruled out because it's rancid, even with yellow ends; Virgin is too recent; and Electric Blue can't be used because 86259 is already painted that colour (but not for any other more obvious reason).

ACLG's previous decision to paint 87002 Rail Blue and reinstate the Royal Sovereign nameplates received so many negative responses that a new livery has been devised to avoid any historical accuracy and simply provide a protective coating for the bodywork. The result is presented in the above mock-up, and I'm sure you'll agree, will go very well with any stock to which it's attached.

In case you can't make out the nameplate, it reads The National Association of Livery Frothers and Impassioned Colour Scheme Opinion Formers - the real plates are currently being cast by Newton Replicas.

* It's not too hard: ACLG = preservation group; ETL = ACLG's company used to run locos on the main line; ETS = the company overhauling the 87s for export.

Fictitious Liveries
Here's a 47 in plain Rail Blue - I'm taking the liberty of assuming that some nod to style would be given, and added some Rail Grey around the windows. Odd, isn't it?Previous | NextOne of the early suggestions for 87002's next livery...

From simon at 2008-05-02 14:19:30 : wot about the early inter-city with yellow cabs (after br blue) as this would go with the cargo-d set
From Daniel Kelly at 2008-05-02 17:19:32 : Nice! LOL
From David Broster at 2008-05-02 19:35:28 : Nice one! :D These're just getting silly now, like fictitious liveries should be!, ie. ficitious liveries, not existing liveries on different stock!
From PrentonPimp at 2008-05-02 20:31:37 : "....and in the longest locomotive name competition, George Jackson Churchward must stand aside and admire this beauty!"
From Robert Purcell at 2008-05-03 15:49:28 : Well, it's different!!!!! Just a thought, won't the rivets to hold that nameplate cost more than the paint? : )
From Postman Prat at 2008-05-03 16:10:32 : Certainly different!! If all else fails try Sky blue/pink with yellow polka dots and see how that goes down
From L. E. Greys at 2008-05-03 16:58:55 : Bizarrest livery yet. It looks like apple green, Porterbrook purple, electric blue and Strathclyde orange, so I'm guessing an identity crisis.
From Chris S. at 2008-05-03 20:42:51 : I say use the BR Blue livery... i like it just not sure about the 36 way jumper units... especially since its already been said it would be nigh impossible to rewire them into the actual loco control...
From Arthur Cannings at 2008-05-04 21:05:54 : Hey, its the AC loco groups loco so let a vote of the members decide, personaly i like the corporate blue idea, As you say the stock is painted in blue/grey so lets have a 87 that matches. By the way as it will be in 1970/80s era livery does that mean that the charters its used on will be charged at 1970s rates??
From PrentonPimp at 2008-05-04 23:06:58 : Shame on all of you who bicker and squabble about liveries - I have my personal favourites, and you all have yours. Let's just be happy that there's going to be an '87' on the main line, eh? It doesn't matter what livery it is these days as, let's face it, most stock is a mish-mash of colour and the loco won't match it anyway!
From Ian33201 at 2008-05-05 00:34:32 : Dreadful ! Whats the story Balamory !
From David46013 at 2008-05-13 12:34:25 : Well done in adding the 87 to your collection I dont care how you paint it as long as it has a future.Nice to see a bit of humour .With those nameplates it must weigh as much as a 46 and should improve the adhesion remumber it as 87702 the first heavyweight electric
From paul astell at 2008-06-03 18:47:09 : well the ac group have a full house what about large logo blue 0r green with small yellow panels
From jim knowles at 2008-06-05 20:34:57 : Ibet the rivet counters hate this one!!!!!
